We have been using SharePoint since 2002 to manage our project schedules and tasks, communicate with our clients and sub-contractors, and to securely share files across the web.  Before SharePoint, we used email as a quasi-document management tool (still a bad idea), and followed a lot of manual process steps while managing a project.  Some of our processes had a real caveman feel to them.
